The Political Pastor
Jue Fuiten, the son of rural ministers, promotes voter registration
and speaks out on gay marriage while leading a Bothell congregation

Pastor Joe Fuiten says he dreamt of becoming President of the United 
States for years, starting in the fifth grade.

In 2004, he finally made it to the White House, but it wasn't as 
commander in chief. Instead, Fuiten was invited to attend the National 
Day of Prayer as director of the Washington Social Conservatives for 
the Bush-Cheney election committee.

Fuiten traded his presidential aspirations for the ministry when he was 
in college, but his passion for politics never went away. Today, the 
Bothell pastgor is considered one of the most influential evangelical 
conservatives in Washington.

Although Fuiten can't openly endorse a political party or individual 
candidate while preaching to his congregation at Cedar Park Assembly of 
God, there is nothing to stop him from impacting people's political 
decisions. He is free to use his title and the name of his church while 
making endorsements, without the risk of losing Cedar Park's tax-exempt 
status.

During elections, Fuiten leads voter-registration campaigns that start 
by handing out forms to his congregation members. He also posts his 
candidate preferences on a Web site (www.pastor-picks.com). His choices 
are almost exclusively Republican.

Fuiten doesn't hide his desire to see that the law reflects Christian 
values. He is perhaps the most proactive figure in the state when it 
comes to pushing that envelope. Yet, despite Fuiten's ability to flex 
his evangelical muscle, he is surprisingly open to differing 
viewpoints, and has even banded together with non-Christian religious 
groups when there is common ground.

In February, he voiced support for a group of Muslims who objected to 
Muslims who objected to brochures that featured excerpts from the 
Koran. Fuiten claimed he was denouncing the intolerance shown to a 
minourity religion.

The Root of Fuiten's Beliefs

Fuiten's conservative, religious pedigree dates way back. He grew up in 
rural Oregon with parents who were Assembly of God ministers. His 
family lived for years in a parsonage that was attached directly to a 
church.

Fuiten earned a degree in political science from Willamette University, 
a school he describes as "the place aspiring politicians went to 
school." While in college, he was elected chairman of the College 
Republicans of Oregon, as well as student-body president. He also 
completed an internship with the Oregon Legislature, working on the 
Oregon Motorist Information Act of 1971.

Fuiten said his calling to the ministry came on a Friday night while 
praying and reading the Bible. He recalled, "I said to the Lord, 'I'm 
going to sit here and read this Bible until you talk to me.'" A 
passage, from Daniel 12:3, reads, "Those who are wise will shine like 
the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to 
righteousness, like the stars forever and ever."

Fuiten said he knew exactly what he was meant to do after reading that 
passage. Although he was still involved in politics, he became licensed 
as a minister, and helped found the Willamette Christian Body on 
campus. Fuiten was even at the cutting edge of the Christian-rock 
movement, having founded the Sweet Jesus, Prince of Peace Rock Festival 
in 1971.

Ten years after interning with the Oregon Legislature and producing 
concerts that rocked for Jesus, Fuiten found himself as the senior 
pastor at Cedar Park Assembly of God. The church has grown considerably 
since then, and how includes about 5,000 members and 300 employees. it 
also includess a 1,500-student school, several counseling centers, an 
auto shop for low-income car owners and a cemetery.

A person can sense that Fuitetn is a history buff just from taking a 
look at his office. One of the longest walls in the room is lned from 
ceiling to floor with books on history and theology. A display case at 
one end is filled with artifacts dating back to the earliest days of 
civilisation. Fuiten acquired most of them during trips to the Middle 
East. There are laps from the Byzantine, Greek, and Roman empires, 
coins from the Justinian era, and arrows and nails from pre-Christian 
days.

Fuiten has written two books that interpret history from a Christian 
perspective - "Chaos and the End of Time," an approach to history based 
on Daniel's revelations, and "Revence of Ephesus," which compares the 
societal issues of the first century with those of modern times.

Same-sex marriage

Last December, a poll was conducted by Elway Research Group to gauge 
support for same-sex marriage in the state of Washington. Fifty-five 
percent of those polled indicated opposition. This was an increase from 
a 2004 Seattle Times poll that showed only 44 percent opposition.

A second question from the survey asked what impact the state Supreme 
Court's decision would have on upcoming elections; 54 percent of those 
polled said they were less likely to re-elect a justice who overturned 
the act.

The Elway poll was conducted at the same time that Washington's highest 
court was hearing argumentss over the constitutionality of the Defense 
of Marriage Act (DOMA) from 1998. The court ruled 5-4 to uphold DOMA on 
July 26.

The poll was conducted by Elway was paid for by the Faith and Freedom 
Network, chaired by Fuiten, who made sure the results reached 
legislators and justices before the Supreme Court decision was made.

"I wanted them to recognise that there is little support for gay 
marriage in Washington," he said.

That wasn't the only thing Fuiten did to influence the court's 
decision. He also acted as a third-party intervener in the case and 
sponsored a rally in Olympia. With an estimated 10,000 participants, 
the demonstration was one of the largest ever held in the state's 
capitol.

Fuiten said his main beef with state-sponsoured marriage for same-sex 
cuoples is that it would give benefits to people who don't need them.

"What interest does the government have in incentivising homosexual 
marriage?" Fuiten asked. "My answer is, none. It's a matter of what's 
in the interest of society. This goes back to the Greeks."

Fuiten claims that same-sex couples are rarely capable of raising 
stable children, and shouldn't be rewarded with benefits the way 
heterosexual couples are. Yet he stops short of saying gays should be 
prohibited from forming civil unions or living together.

"If gay people want to live together, who cares?" he said. "If a church 
wants to bless them, who cares? It's not an issue of personal freedom, 
it's public policy."

Longtime gay activist Bill Debay, of the public-awareness group Don't 
Amend, argues that same-sex couples are perfectly suited for raising 
children and deserve all the same rights as heterosexual couples.

Dubay said Fuiten "wants strong families and talks about making 
families secure for kids. Why should my family be less secure than his 
family? The government should have an interest in the security of all 
families, regardless of the sexual orientation of the  parents."

Nationwide polls conducted by Pew Research Centre show that a majority 
of Americans are opposed to same-sex marriage but favour giving 
homosexuals certain rights related to marriage. Benefits for married 
couples number in the hundreds in the state of Washington. Dubay said 
homosexuals are entitled to all, rather than some, of these rights.

CWA: FDA Oversteps Authority by Approving Non-Prescription Access to 
Morning-After Pill

Washington, D.C. – Concerned Women for America (CWA) strongly opposes 
today’s decision by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve 
Plan B, the morning-after pill, as a non-prescription drug. This 
decision allows anyone over 18 to purchase the drug without a 
prescription, thereby making the drug accessible to minors who can 
easily obtain the drug from those meeting the age requirement. The FDA 
has overstepped its authority in this decision and the result will be 
young teens who get a high dose drug without their parent’s knowledge 
or physician’s oversight.

“The FDA’s decision today will have a detrimental affect on women and 
parents around the country,” says President Wendy Wright. “If the FDA 
thinks that enacting an age restriction will work, or that the drug 
company will enforce it when it has already announced it has no 
intention of enforcing it, then they are living in a dream world. 
Enforcement requires a penalty for violating the restriction. The FDA 
has no authority or ability to enforce an age-restriction, and Barr, 
the Plan B drug maker, has neither the ability nor the willingness. The 
most it could do is not supply the drug to a violator—something that 
will never happen.

What Pro-abortionists Don't Want You to Know About the Morning-After 
Pill

On May 6, 2004, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declined to make 
the morning-after pill, also known as Plan B, available 
over-the-counter (OTC) without a prescription. Proponents of the 
morning-after pill fought back, alleging that "politics trumped 
science." But do their claims stand up to scrutiny?

Claim #1: The morning-after pill does NOT cause an abortion.


Web sites that promote the morning-after pill claim that it "will not 
cause an abortion." However, they also state that one way that the 
morning-after pill can prevent pregnancy is by inhibiting implantation 
in the uterus. They fail to say what is inhibited from implanting. It 
is an embryo, a human in the earliest stage of life. Embryos contain 23 
chromosomes from the mother and 23 chromosomes from the father - the 
full genetic information of a distinct human being.1 This "inhibition" 
caused by the morning-after pill terminates a human life.2

Claim #2: The morning-after pill has been adequately tested and is safe 
for all users.

The FDA declined to approve the morning-after pill to be available 
over-the-counter (OTC) because it has not been adequately tested to 
ensure that this high level of hormones can be used safely by 
adolescents, who constitute a target market for the drug. As the owner 
of Plan B admits, there are no data on what occurs in an overdose.3 
This could occur if a young woman decides to take an extra dose when 
she experiences the common side effect of vomiting or, in her belief, 
to increase its effectiveness. It is currently unknown whether a 
maximum, safe, daily, monthly, or yearly dose exists.

Promoters have not conducted the necessary studies, yet claim that it's 
been proven safe.

Why the Morning-After Pill should not be available without a 
prescription.

Facts:

The morning-after pill (MAP) lacks testing for safety to women. Access 
to the drug over-the-counter, or without a prescription, would prompt 
use among consumers who, unknowingly, have medical conditions that put 
them at high risk of life-threatening complications. It could be 
slipped to women without their knowledge, and statutory rapists would 
rely on it to cover up their abuse of adolescents. In areas that allow 
easy access, the sexually transmitted disease rates have skyrocketed. 
The drug owner encourages multiple sex partners (putting women at risk 
of sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs), and endorses frequent use 
of the drug, though it has not conducted studies on multiple use. 
Morning-after pill promoters have been found guilty of overstating the 
efficacy of the drug and understating the risks to women.

FRC on the Front Line

Yesterday, FRC, with the help of our good friends at Alliance Defense 
Fund, filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the Maryland Court of 
Appeals (the highest state court in Maryland) in defense of marriage. 
As in so many other states, homosexual activists are asking the courts 
to do what they could never accomplish in the legislature - overturn 
society's oldest and Biblically-ordained institution, marriage. The 
homosexual activists seek to re-define marriage to include 
relationships besides one man and one woman. Since the battle is being 
waged in the courts rather than the legislature, FRC is helping to make 
the case that "same-sex" marriage is not marriage. It's something 
radically different, and it is entirely rational for state legislature 
not to permit same-sex couples to marry. "Same-sex" couples are not the 
same as "opposite-sex" couples, either in terms of procreation, optimal 
child-rearing, fidelity, stability, etc. Thus, it is not 
"discriminatory" for state legislatures to refuse to redefine the 
institution of marriage so that homosexual couples can participate in 
it. The battle for marriage is far from over. That is why FRC, along 
with our allies, continues to defend marriage wherever a tyrannical 
judge or careless politician puts it at risk.

The Family Action Council of Tennessee and its 501c4 arm, Family Action 
of Tennessee, are conducting a campaign to pass a marriage amendment to 
the Tennessee Constitution. The website, RealMarriage.org is being 
utilized to conduct grassroots activism and public media to educate 
voters regarding the marriage amendment.

The grassroots strategy is to establish a network of churches in all 95 
counties that will distribute educational information regarding 
marriage and conduct voter registration efforts wherever possible. 
Presently, this effort is focused on the 50 most populous counties in 
which 87 percent of the state's population resides. This effort is led 
by a state grassroots coordinator and three other grassroots 
coordinators in each geographical division of the state.

The media campaign is focused on women, seniors, and people in middle 
Tennessee, the demographic groups most affected by the deceptive 
messages of the amendment's proponents. Targeted radio, print and cable 
television will be used primarily to educate and quiet these groups.

Wal-Mart asks for, and receives, permission to join homosexual marriage 
group

Wal-Mart, the largest retailer in the world, has asked for and received 
permission to join the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. The 
NGLCC is a leading promoter of homosexual marriage.

Although Wal-Mart has never excluded homosexuals from being employees, 
customers, or suppliers, the company wanted to be more closely 
identified with promoting the homosexual agenda. Wal-Mart is now a 
"corporate member" of the NGLCC, putting their approval on the NGLCC's 
efforts to abolish the definition of marriage as the union of one man 
and one woman. A Wal-Mart vice president will serve as an advisor to 
the NGLCC, helping them promote homosexual marriage.

Homosexuals give Ford no public support despite falling sales due to 
AFA boycott
The boycott of Ford Motor Company continues to be effective. Sales in 
August dropped 11.6%. This follows drops of 5% in March, 7% in April, 
2% in May, 6.8% in June and 4.1% in July.

Ford is taking several actions to halt falling sales, but none of them 
include ending financial support for homosexual groups promoting 
same-sex marriage. Ford lost $1.4 billion in the first half of the 
year.

Rather than save money by cutting financial support to homosexual 
groups, Ford plans to cut production by 21%, trim the number of 
dealers, reportedly is seeking a merger or alliance with another auto 
maker, studying taking the company private, and considering selling 
their Jaguar, Volvo and Land Rover units.

Penn. Activist Cites Statistics, Arrest in Suggesting Ban on Homosexual 
Profs

(AgapePress) - A Pennsylvania pro-family group suggests that the recent 
arrest of a University of Pennsylvania professor on child sex charges 
should cause the school to consider banning homosexual professors, just 
as the Boy Scouts ban homosexual troop leaders.

Penn professor Lawrence Scott Ward was arrested last month at 
Washington Dulles International Airport after customs agents searching 
his luggage found three DVDs depicting him having sex with teenage 
boys. It is the third time Ward has faced sex charges involving young 
men. He was arrested in 1999 for solicitation, but was allowed by the 
school to keep his job.

Diane Gramley, who heads the American Family Association of 
Pennsylvania, says the school may want to consider banning homosexual 
professors, given a study by the homosexual magazine The Advocate.

(AgapePress) - An article by Stan Guthrie in Christianity Today 
recently juxtaposed the positions of the culture war nicely. You can 
either concern yourselves with individuals or concern yourself with the 
broader culture.

Or both.

The latter is the only real option for the Christian. Some, weary of 
the fecklessness of political solutions, are converting to an "act 
locally" style of compassionate outreach in their neighborhoods. Still 
others have launched an all-out attempt to win back the culture, 
forgetting about personal involvement at a practical, local level. Both 
of these approaches, of course, are deficient for believers seeking to 
be "salt and the light" as Jesus commanded.

...A leader of the conservative branch of Judaism is traveling the 
United States to prepare synagogues for a potentially divisive change: 
allowing the ordination of openly homosexual rabbis. Rabbi Jerome 
Epstein, executive vice president of the United Synagogue of 
Conservative Judaism, says a committee of scholars who interpret Jewish 
law will likely loosen the current prohibition when they vote in 
December. But he expects the scholars to also let synagogues that 
believe Jewish law condemns same-sex relationships hire only 
heterosexual rabbis. In recent years, many Conservative Jews have 
joined the more liberal Reform stream, which has surpassed the 
Conservative branch as the largest in America. The Reform movement 
ordains homosexuals. For Conservative Jews seeking more rigorous 
observance, the Orthodox branch has become a popular choice. The 
Orthodox strictly adhere to Jewish law, prohibiting women and

OTTAWA - The Institute for Canadian Values is condemning in the 
strongest possible terms what it calls an irresponsible and 
gratuitously obscene sex education curriculum reportedly being 
considered for use in Manitoba high schools.

"This book, entitled 'The Little Black Book – A Book on Healthy 
Sexuality Written by Grrrls (sic) for Grrrls', purports to be a guide 
to healthy emotional development and sexuality," said Joseph Ben-Ami, 
Executive Director of the Institute for Canadian Values. "In reality, 
it is a thinly veiled propaganda piece that undermines healthy 
parent-child relationships, substitutes voodoo myths for actual 
science, and provides advice that, if followed, will certainly result 
in real and serious harm to those who follow it."

OLYMPIA, Wash. - The Washington Supreme Court ruled against gay 
marriage Wednesday, upholding the state's 1998 Defense of Marriage Act. 
The 38 plaintiffs in the case - 19 gay and lesbian couples seeking to 
marry - challenged the constitutionality of the 1998 law, which limits 
marriage to heterosexual couples. Judges in King and Thurston counties 
overturned the law in 2004, citing the state constitution's "privileges 
and immunities" section. The state appealed, and the cases were 
consolidated for state Supreme Court review.
